When is brush picked up?
Pickup is on Mondays and during the spring, summer, and fall months only. Brush is not picked up during January, February or March. If a holiday falls on Monday, chipping will be done on Tuesday. Brush should not be placed to the curb before Sunday, and when it is, the butt side should be towards the street. Please do not place roots, stumps, grapevines, or rosebushes out for chipping. Failure to follow this advice can cause all of the brush to be left at the curb. Continually leaving brush at the curb too early can be cause for citation of the Village’s yard maintenance law.
What happens to the wood chips?
Wood chips are piled near the Wastewater Treatment Facility on North Hartland Street. Village residents only make take wood chips for mulch. Please contact the Village Coordinator if you have any questions.
Refuse/recycling information in the Village
As of July 1st, 2014, refuse/garbage pickup is weekly and recycling pickup is biweekly. To determine when your recycling should be placed to the curb, see the annual Recycling Schedule below. Pickup day is Wednesdays, unless a holiday schedule applies. Please keep in the mind the following: Garbage and recycling should not be placed to the curb before 6:30 p.m. the night before. Residents and businesses that regularly place their trash to the curb more than 12 hours before pick up day could be cited for violating the Village’s yard maintenance code. This could result in a $250 fine and/or imprisonment for up to 15 days. Warning letters are being sent to addresses where trash is regularly put out to the curb too early. We also ask that you not put refuse & recycling out to the curb when there are high winds. Your neighbor does not want to pick up after you.
Each address is allowed to place three large items at the curb per month. Please see the Bulk Collection Calendar for the date each month. These items shall include (but are not limited to) furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpets, appliances, and Christmas trees. If any item requires more than two people to lift it, it will not be taken. Freon must be removed from any freezers, refrigerators, or air conditioning units before it will be taken. This removal is the responsibility of the resident. Please note: tires will no longer be picked up and garbage cans weighing more than 60 pounds will not be emptied. If your trash containers are out too early and fill with snow or rain, they may not be emptied if they are too heavy.
The following holidays may delay trash pickup by one day: NEW YEAR’S DAY, MEMORIAL DAY, INDEPENDENCE DAY, LABOR DAY, THANKSGIVING, AND CHRISTMAS. If collection day is on or follows any of these holidays during the week, collection will be one day later. If you’re not sure, call the Clerk’s Office at 735-3303 to verify when pickup will occur

May I trim a tree or bush in the Village’s right of way?
Per Village Code, Chapter 178, Trees, §178-3 maintenance, planting, trimming, removal and any other activity relating to trees or shrubs within the Village of Middleport which are located within the right-of-way of any street, park, or other property owned by the village shall be performed by or under the supervision of the Village Coordinator, subject to review and control of the Village Board of Trustees in its discretion.
Per Village Code, Chapter 178, Trees, §178-4 no private persons shall remove, trim or mutilate any tree or shrub described in § above.
Why is the Village’s overnight parking ban enforced in the winter?
Signs at the entrances of the village indicate parking is banned on all village streets from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Although this ban is year ’round, it is only enforced during the winter months.
Snow removal equipment operates better and more easily when it doesn’t have to be maneuvered around vehicles. The DPW works diligently to keep the streets clean of snow and ice and try to do this prior to the start of school so buses and vehicles transporting students have safer travels on village streets. This is why parking on village streets between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. is prohibited and this ban is enforced from the first Sunday in November to the first Sunday in April each winter.
If I have a water leak, who is responsible for the repair?
Per Middleport Village Code, Chapter 196, Water, §196-7-A: The owner of the premises to be serviced shall bear the expense of:
- The cost of laying and maintaining the service line from the premises to the curb box.
- The cost of new service to existing mains, including the cost of taps, where new construction by the owner is involved.
- Any other cost not specified in Subsection A(2), connected with bringing water from the main lines maintained by the Village to the owner’s premises.
Will the DPW make sewer calls?
As a courtesy to Village residents, the Public Works Department will make sewer calls during regular business hours only. The majority of sewer calls that the DPW make are usually the homeowner’s responsibility. Should you have a sewer problem after hours, on the weekend, or on a holiday, it is your responsibility to contact a plumber for the problem. Village Code Article IV, §150-8. “Cost born by owner” states that “All work and expense incident to the installation, connection and maintenance of the building sewer from the building to the sanitary sewer connection shall be borne by the owner. ”
If I fill my swimming pool, do I still pay sewer costs?
Yes, the Village does not have a program to fill a pool and only pay for water. If you have a 24′ round pool, usage is about 13,000 gallons to fill the pool. This would add $111.80 to your regular water/sewer bill. If you would like to know exactly how much more your water/sewer bill will be when you fill your pool, call the Village Hall with the gallons used, and they will calculate it for you.
I’m selling my house. How do I get a final water reading done?
Call the Village Hall when you know the closing date so an appointment may be set up to take a reading within 48 hours of the closing date. If you have received a notice that your property needs a backflow device installed, the inspection of the device will be done when the final reading is taken.
Why did I get a letter about a backflow device?
Chapter 196 Water, §196-3-C states “An acceptable backflow prevention device shall be installed on each service line to a customer’s water system at or near the property line or immediately inside the building be served, but in all cases before the first branch line leading off the service line, as follows:
- Whenever a customer’s water system is rated hazardous, an acceptable reduced pressure zone device or air gap shall be installed.
- Whenever a customer’s water system is rated aesthetically objectionable, as a minimum, an acceptable double-check valve assembly shall be installed.
This code is enforced when a property changes hands, if the property does not already have a backflow device installed.
We also recommend the installation of an expansion tank when the backflow device is installed.
